PrimFeed, another Second Life Social Media site

PrimFeed, another Second Life Social Media site

I’ve been seeing quite a bit of buzz lately around PrimFeed, which is touted as a Flickr alternative specifically for Second Life residents, created by a fellow resident. Interestingly, PrimFeed isn’t the only social media site exclusively for Second Life, despite such claims. Personally, I don’t use any of these Second Life-specific platforms because I prefer to share my Second Life photos and blog with the entire internet.

Why Some Second Life Residents are Upset with Flickr

The primary reasons that some residents are frustrated with Flickr often boil down to two things:

    1. They aren’t PRO users and face limitations.
    2. Frequent Terms of Service (TOS) violations, such as posting adult content and not properly moderating it, or engaging in commercial activities on a free account results the account being deleted.

Flickr offers a free option that lets users host up to 1,000 photos, provided they adhere to specific restrictions. On the other hand, PrimFeed permits adult and commercial content on free accounts but limits file sizes to 1500×1500 pixels. I believe free account limitations are justified due to the operational costs of such platforms, and I’m willing to pay for a service as long as it meets my needs.

My Take on Flickr vs. PrimFeed

I’m not dissatisfied with Flickr nor am I seeking an alternative. Since signing up as a PRO member in 2007, I’ve found Flickr to be the best photo hosting service for Second Life brands and bloggers. For under $60 USD a year, I enjoy unlimited photo and video storage and the ability to embed these media into my blog seamlessly.

    First Impressions of PrimFeed

PrimFeed strikes me more as a social media platform, akin to a streamlined version of X (formerly Twitter), rather than a robust image hosting site like Flickr. It offers social features but lacks the comprehensive photo hosting capabilities that Flickr provides.

In my opinion, PrimFeed is not a replacement for Flickr. It’s more of a pared-down social media platform that may or may not gain traction. Without enough paying subscribers, its sustainability is questionable due to the costs associated with hosting and bandwidth.

Here are the essential features missing from PrimFeed:

    • No viewing without a PrimFeed account and are signed in
    • No high quality image format, everything is converted/compressed to .webp
    • No favorites tab, makes it hard to revisit images I liked
    • No search, can’t find anything I’m looking for
    • No direct messaging/private messaging
    • No views count
    • No dates on gallery images
    • No groups
    • No albums
    • No tagging other people
    • No tags
    • No sharing outside of PrimFeed
    • No private photo settings
    • No embed code for your blog
    • No clickable profile links
    • No videos
    • No notifications to email
    • No custom URL/ability to change url
    • No stats who liked/shared/viewed?
    • No editing tools/batch editing for photos
    • No automatic account deletion (must send a notecard and wait 72 hours)

Is PrimFeed a reasonable replacement for Twitter? Absolutely. It’s designed to look and feel just like Twitter, ensuring you’ll feel right at home. Plus, you won’t have to deal with annoying real-life ads and irrelevant content cluttering your feed. When you evaluate PrimFeed as an alternative to Twitter, you’ll find it much more appealing.

    Copyright Infringement or Inspiration?

    POSE by you.

I agree that content theft is inexcusable, but inspiration is not content theft. Quotes lifted from Aya Liotta’s blog entry:

“…It has come to my attention that many of your poses bare a very strong resemblance to poses of other creators on FILOS and others throughout SL.”

“…He claims, he plans to make exact replicas of some of our favorite pose creators work and sell it for 1L.”

Here is my unsolicited opinion on the “issue”. Making poses is one of the many things I dabble in when I’m bored, just for fun. I make mostly static poses, and in my opinion, they cannot be copyrighted by themselves. If I make a stand, and someone else comes along and makes a similar stand, no content theft has occurred. Anybody is just as capable as I am of opening poser, qavimator, DAZ Studio or their animation program of choice and making WHATEVER POSE THEY WANT TO. It’s just human nature to be inspired by others we see and try to make our own or make it better. This is SL, you don’t have to be FIRST… but you can be better. Or even worst, it doesn’t matter as long as it’s YOUR OWN WORK. Am I alone in my opinion? I’ve decided to poll a couple of friends in SL to see their point of view. Posted below are opinions by friends who have decided to remain anonymous in their entirety.

    —- Anon 1’s opinion —-

Maybe I’m playing devil’s advocate here, but I find it hard to claim copyright over a pose that anyone can emulate if they have the right posing software. I can make poses myself and can create stands, sits, walks, and I would be miffed if someone accused me of copyright infringement if I decided to upload a sit with legs crossed. If we have the resources, why spend the 250L when you can spend 10L to upload something you posed yourself with full perms and creative authorship with it.

Dances, I would think may hold some weight. But a pose? A hug? A particular snuggling/sex position? Have we forgotten what derivative work means? Or should we start slapping the kama sutra book on posers too since they might on the chance, be getting their inspiration from there too?

Unless the actual bvh was hacked or copied, it’s not copyright infringement. i don’t even know if it’s possible to throw copyright on a pose. First of all, posing software was intended for renders and animations. Read that as pictures and films that I’ll just simply call “projects.” That static pose holds no weight unless it was rendered into an actual project. And even then the whole project is copyright, not that one element of it. Trying to lay claim on a pose anyone can interpret on several posing software is like trying to lay claim on the on the black dresses, the stiletto, hairstyles etc.

I mean by their rule of thumb then we can’t recreate any movement that may resemble theirs. But poses and anims aren’t meant to stand on their own. That animation is nothing unless a character dances it. That pose isn’t seen unless someone takes a pic with characters using it. And as far as mimicking advertising goes, do I have to say it? Advertising copies off and feeds off each other. If that’s an ad, it’s open to derivative work. And sorry, no one can scream copyright if you’re using the same black background and lighting that anyone with 2 cents worth of PS skills can do. Static poses determine nothing … if you want to really shine, make animations. That’s where it gets complicated.

For the most part, animators/posers in SL have it easy. Anytime someone puts out a creation in SL, there is a high level of risk with the potential of return. Anything you put out there as your own work is like that. For these pose vendors, you’re already putting something out there, an idea. And since you’re selling that idea, you’re enabling people to compound on that. Build on that. Derive from that. You get paid for the pose, you’re exposing that pose. And some folks will see it and go meh, I can make that myself. And that’s how it goes. You don’t hold rights on what people do with it afterwards. Unless they are outright hacking into the system to extract the bvh file and flipping that for sale.

    —- Anon 2’s opinion —

Anon 2: well really you have to ask the question, how much ownership does a person have on anything in this game that emulates rl. Cell phones, blue tooth, pagers, etc are a prime example. Iphones. Materialistic items yes, but just give an example. Dig deeper, and you find that tattoos and clothing design is done similarly.

Anon 2: so naturally poses and stances etc, aren’t really anyones to claim

Anon 2: you can claim the work and the efforts put into it, the detail for the likeness of the rl version, but beyond that there’s not much

Anon 2: in a similar shade, there’s also the arguement held in rl over cologne and perfumes. A scent cannot be copyrighted. You can see 7 different bottles, each with different names, each different prices. Which is the best? The one who’s name you prefer. On some aspects the only possible way you can claim some things is by the weight the name carries

    I’ve been cubed!

    Cubed

Help me! I’ve been Cubed by this adorable new pose prop from Glitterati. This is a mesh cube, scripted to texture change 9 different colors and 10 poses. I stretched the box to fit me, cos I think I am a lil’ bit too tall for the original cube size.

    Cubed

I won’t be taking off this My Bunny Band from monso any time soon! The one I am wearing is available for free (on the lucky board) at Bombi.

    Monso

My Bag, from monso – Bamboo | Fish | Crane | Ggomsu

These bags are mesh, but they’re not scripted with any poses. They’re quite adorable though, and you’ll be able to attach them to your hand and wear with your own poses. Find them at Bombi, too.

    What I’m Wearing:

    Exile – London Rain (Vanilla)
One Bad Pixel – Babytux (Pink)
Monso – My Bunny Band (Sackdong)
    G-Field – Flower Pumps “Eve”

  • UBU Drunks (Urban Bomb Unit)

The new UBU Drunks by Urban Bomb Unit are incredible!! I'm a huge fan of UBU so I was so excited to see a new release and especially the new Customizer HUD which makes customizating SO much easier and more fun too! I'm truly amazed by the sheer number of options available, every part of this shoe that you see here is customizable with different colors and fabrics choices. Another perk is they are unisex! I've tried to make a variety of customs to show you that they really suit any mood – girly, army, gold (is that Burberry fabric I see?), and platinum!

In addition to the drop-down menu to change size, here is the new customization HUD. When you click a part of the shoe that you want to mod, it will turn red on the HUD. You can select several pieces at once to mod if they will have the same texture. This is genius…. I  LOVE IT.

The attention to detail is amazing and everytime I get my hands on a new pair of UBU, I keep thinking they'll be the last pair I'll ever need. But with great shoes, one pair is never enough. I have every pair of shoes from UBU and I still get excited when there's a new release.

Right now these are on sale for $595L, there are gifting options available.

    D!va hair

    D!va

D!va Hair – Chizuru (group gift) | Haruka (group gift in-store)

Do you know what happens when I stumble into a new hair store? My linden$ disappears and half a dozen hairstyles land in my inventory! YAY! 🙂

I found D!va Hair (byMarisa Kira) while looking for free hair for the Newbie Style Challenge. These two hairstyles above are free gifts, they’re so cute.

Even though I really like the Cat’s eye blonde texture at D!va, I really think there should be more texture choices. All hairstyles also includes a version with bangs.

I don’t like that the hair is no mod (but includes a resize script). The resize script is alright for some of the styles but a few of them really aren’t wearable (although you can’t see it in my pictures, I suck at editing via the script so I couldn’t move some prims to cover some bald areas).

Do I like D!va? Yes, for $100L per color, they’re a great deal but the no mod/resize script thing is annoying. I hope they change this in future releases.

Below are a few of my favorites…

    D!va

    D!va Hair – Maria | Miki

    D!va

    D!va Hair – Noriko | Risa

    D!va

    D!va Hair – Tomoko | Yuri

    Free Eyes

I needed free eyes for my Newbie Style Challenge and Elfreda Quar sent me a notecard with lots of places with free gorgeous eyes. I visited a few of them, and decided that I liked these best. They’re actually so pretty I am wearing them on my main av too.

All 3 pairs are free at Ibanez Eyes. Thanks Elfreda for the hot tip!!

    D!va

    What I’m Wearing:

    LeLutka – Lola (Light) Makeup5 (L Brows)
LeLutka – Lola (Lipstick) Nature Matte
Couverture – Lace Hem Dress (Little Red Riding) tunic
LeeZu – O’LaLa Micro Jeans Skirt
    Donna Flora – Lia Ring
