Today I’m taking a look at Sansar, lovingly referred to by SL citizens as “Second Life 2.0”. I took a look at the game because my other friends on Plurk were kinda scared to, so I volunteered to step up and poke around. Yes, that was really a conversation on Plurk and I said I would go on behalf of everybody. So! Here I am, back from my trip and writing about it.
Before I begin, let me state that what I write here is my impression of the game. If I missed a fact or got something wrong, then that’s the fault of the user experience I received. I’m just going to present what I know.

When I first started blogging, a lot of the “popular” bloggers wore Brunette hair. I started out SL as a Brunette, but changed to Blonde after a couple of months. Even though Gogo is mostly a Blonde now, I really love certain Dark Brown colors, like Espresso or Cocoa. I really can’t stick with one color too long, since I tend to match my hair with whatever skin I’m wearing so it doesn’t look odd. Luckily, this Swedish Blonde shade really works with Light skin tone from LeLutka.
Awhile ago I told a friend of mine that I think I’m going Brunette to change it up a little, she said NOOOOOOOOOO. There are too many Brunette bloggers already, and not enough Blondes. I thought about that, and took a quick look at the fashion feeds, and yep, the assumption that everyone wants to be “Barbie” is just not true. Not everyone is tan and Blonde in SL, a lot of bloggers wear Red or Brunette hair colors. Have you noticed that? It’s rare to see a Platinum Blonde.
Oh damn, I think I’ve rambled on today. What I meant to say was, Truth has four new hairstyles out and I’m loving my Swedish Blonde shade 🙂

Second Life 2.0 Shadows
Last year, Hamlet blogged about how to enable shadows in the SL Release Candidate viewer and I was so sad I couldn’t get my PC to do it! I waited almost a year before splurging on a new PC with a better graphics card and more memory so I could turn on shadows, finally.
The picture above is my very first snapshot with shadows enabled that looked halfway decent.
I read tutorials about it, I asked my friends, everyone gave me different advice. Use Kirsten, Use Rainbow, Use Emerald, blah blah. I downloaded Kirsten, but it made my avatar’s eyes turn Orange and also I didn’t like the UI at all (why was it tinted green?). I haven’t ever used a 3rd party viewer before so it threw me off a lot, so I ran back to the Second Life 2.0 viewer and tried again.

While shadows is still not perfect (eyes are invisible so you have to wear prim eyes), I just love it so much. I hope SL is listening! I want my eyes to rez and for alphas to rez better, pretty please?
I’m still getting the hang of it but I really like what I’ve seen so far. Since I really suck at Photoshop, I could never have done shadows like these on my own.

I found these two blog posts very helpful. I didn’t do everything that Gwyneth Llewelyn suggested in her blog post, but it might help some of you guys!
How I turned my shadows on:
Ctrl+Alt+Q to bring up the Develop menu on your SL 2.0 client
Scroll down to Rendering and make sure these things are checked:- -> Framebuffer Objects
- -> Deferred Rendering
- -> Global Illumination (optional)
Note: Make sure to that your Preferences -> Graphics is set to Ultra before attempting to turn on shadows.
I couldn’t take a snapshot with everything set on High (my screen turned black), so once shadows was enabled, I turned a few things that are not so important to low, like terrain, sky, trees, flexiprims… etc.
If you can’t enable shadows at all, maybe your graphics card is too old.
I am definitely open to suggestions, so if you’ve found a viewer or combination of settings that works, please share! 🙂

This Mesh Rustic Knit Cardigan from Mon Tissu is very pretty! I’m feeling so spoiled by the ease of wearing a single mesh attachment, that I don’t know if I can go back to a sweater with multiple attachment pieces to adjust. I don’t really care at this point, how I’m rezzing to “everyone else” that is not on a mesh-enabled viewer, get with the times, cos mesh is HOT.
I did notice this weekend while trying on a bunch of mesh things, that its not really possible to layer a mesh tank top underneath a texture/or regular sculpted prims jacket. Or wearing a mesh shirt tucked into pants.. its just not possible. For people who thought that texture clothing would be replaced by mesh, I think it won’t, in fact, we probably need more basic under things! I would love some more texture tanks, bra, panties, etc, to wear underneath my new texture clothes (even though a sometimes it’s hidden by alpha).

I rarely ever do these look-of-the-day type entries mainly because I am lazy and I like to run around barefoot most of the time. I'm making an exception today to show you some new goodies that I bought today during a shopping binge & some older stuff that have been floating around the black hole that is my invy.
This gorgeous Swallowtail Butterfly necklace & matching hair clip is a work of art. Natsuko Paravane does prim jewelry using themes from nature like flowers & animals like no other in SL; I love her pieces so much, and they have a chunkier look than other jewelry but still very delicate looking.
This new Shiki Bikini Outfit (in Tropical Leaves print) is perfect for virtual island life. I rarely wear long skirts, but this one was sexy enough because it had a matching bikini top.
These Kalnins Coquette shoes are all the rage this week, I'm seeing it everywhere on other people's blog so I had to grab a pair and see them for myself. For $500L, these are texture-changeable with 11 color-combo presets, or you can customize your own with 11 different textures (they're all solid colored textures, not prints, although Hawaiian prints would have been very pretty!). Up close, I thought the sculpted work was amazing but the textures looked a bit dusty? Not saturated enough? I'm not sure what it needs since I'm not a creator, but the textures are not as vibrant as other shoes I have. Still, for $500L, its a pretty good deal since you can play around with a lot of different colors combination.
