I stumbled across the Blackout August initiative created by Second Life resident Imogen Aurelia, and I’m honestly really into the idea.

Even though I love shopping in SL, I’m totally on board with taking a pause. A reset for 30 days to stop the constant cycle of buying, and just enjoy what I already have. Maybe even do something different in Second Life. What’s that something else? Hanging out with friends, exploring sims, playing a game. Just being present.
This isn’t about boycotting anyone. I love SL creators. I’ve been shopping and blogging for over 18 years. But even from the consumer side, I can feel the burnout. Creators are producing too much, too fast, and shoppers can’t keep up. I miss when a new release felt special for months, when we showed it off to friends and designers actually had time to enjoy the success of their work instead of rushing into the next release or discounting at a weekend sale.
If going 30 days without shopping feels impossible, you can still take part in a way that works for you. Maybe that means buying only the things you really love instead of grabbing everything just because it’s new or on sale. Personally, I’ve been buying less without even meaning to. My inventory is out of control — I’m at 93K now and trying hard not to hit 100K. I need this break just to organize and reset. That alone is a project.
Can you still enjoy SL without buying anything? Yes. Absolutely. Brands are always giving away gifts and store credit. Most of us have inventory full of unopened things. You can wear what you already have in a new color or styled differently. You can still support creators you love this month by wearing items that you already own.
Some people might say this kind of pause hurts the economy or puts creators at risk, but that’s a much bigger conversation. Most of us are just players. We’re not here to keep the grid economy afloat. I’ve spent years spending money in SL, and I’ll continue to support the creators I love, but I don’t believe it’s my responsibility to make sure everyone is earning. SL is a hobby for most of us. We engage with it how and when we want to.
So I’m trying out Blackout August. I might go the full 30 days, or maybe just a week here and there. But I’m doing it. You can too. Try it in a way that feels right for you. Let Second Life be fun again, not just a sales feed. Let’s breathe a little.
I’ve been wearing the Lumi skin from Glam Affair since it was released back in March. In real life time, that’s not very long at all. In Second Life time, though, it feels like ages ago. But does time even matter when you like a skin? You could probably wear the same skin for years and never feel dated, especially with the current state of Second Life. Until LeLutka releases the new PURE mesh heads, most of us are still wearing EvoX heads, and skin designers continue to create beautiful 2048 skins with the same level of skill and quality. There is really no rush to change your look unless you want to.
That said, in Gogo time, four months feels like a long time. I spend an embarrassing amount of time staring at my own face, after all. So today, even though it seems like Glam Affair releases dozens of skins every month, I finally found a new face. The new Alix skin from Glam Affair is available at Equal10. I like most Glam Affair skins, but if I’m going to call something my face, it has to feel instantly familiar. It’s that little moment of, “Ah, there you are,” when I put it on. That’s exactly how I felt with Alix, even though I already knew I would be reaching for Izzie’s to remove the freckles and pores. As you can see, I did just that, and I love the result. The original version is beautiful too, and honestly, a lot of skins in Second Life are released looking more like my edited version. People then use Izzie’s or other tattoo layers to add freckles, pores, highlights, and other details back in. I sometimes go in the opposite direction and remove those details instead. The fact that we can customize skins so easily now is one of my favorite things about Second Life.
ISON recently had a 40% off sale, so I picked up something I do not normally wear, a leather outfit. Paired with the new Truth Verse hairstyle, the whole look reminds me of an anime baddie, and I am kind of obsessed with it. Maybe I need to stop wearing pastel pink and white all the time and lean into dark leather. Then again, let’s not get carried away.
I had a different look in mind for this week’s Bubblegum Weekend post, but once I tried on this new Eve hairstyle from Wasabi Pills, I knew had to create a Mermaid look! The beads, and string are color-changing so you can create lots of cute combos to match your outfit. I chose to wear the Aquatic hair color, cos it just pops against my light colored Lumina Nymph outfit from Evie’s Closet.

How many SEmotion Libellune pets do I have? At least a hundred. The latest release is the Noble Deer (rideable), which is available at The Arcade. Despite my feelings about gachas, you should definitely get yourself a sweet deer to ride around this winter season.
Did you know that if you have the rare HUD for any Libellune pets, you can use the animations and accessories on the common ones? This is quite cool, considering that many of the pets sold by this store are gacha items, resulting in a collection of common ones. However, if you happen to score a rare, you can customize all of your common pets too.
If you’re in search of a cozy winter set, the Nataly Set from Art and Ko will keep you warm all winter long while ensuring you look stylish. The jacket and shoes come in different colors, though the pants are only available in black. You might find similar leggings from other brands if you wish to wear another color. Unfortunately, you cannot turn off the socks on the shoes or change their color. I have come to expect a lot of customization from brands, so it would have been nice to at least have the option to change the sock color or turn them off.

The SLink Real Teeth attachment offers the ultimate customization if you like the “open lips” look. This attachment is sculpted prim teeth and tintable lips texture worn with an alpha layer that hides some portion of the existing lips (on your skin). This product does require intermediate editing skills to fit to your lips shape and also be able to tint the lips texture so it blends seamlessly otherwise it would look weird.
I would say that this is really awesome for photographs, but I would not wear it in-world all the time. The front looks nice, and depending on how good you are at editing (I’m not that good), the side view is decent but not perfect (it would never be unless the lips were custom made to fit).
The SLink Real Teeth package includes: SLink Teeth Corner down, up, and straight in Color and in Grey. I am wearing “corner down” to fit the shape of my lips, because my lips corners are slightly turned down. I think Siddean is brilliant for offering 3 corner options so there’s something for everyone.
