    Fanta

    Fanta

I just love this April dress from Celoe so much, I’ve worn it several times already! When I blogged it two weeks ago, it was not yet released, but the dress is out now, along with a couple of other short dresses! I’ve also been horrified to discover that every single time I have worn this dress, I have forgotten to wear underwear, so please remember to wear yours! 🙂

    Fanta

Mmm Fanta (like the Orange flavored soft drink) looks great on! I didn’t want to wear too much Orange, so I paired it with Montsegur Pumps in White from Mon Tissu, and a Fresh Spring Necklace from Dark Mouse.

    What I’m Wearing:

Friday – Scarlett 2 (Happy Blond)
    Celoe – April Dress (Fanta)
Dark Mouse – Fresh Spring Necklace
Mon Tissu – Montsegur Pumps (White)

  • I’m petite, really!

    Mochi & Gogo

I’ve always thought of my avatar as petite, but I guess I am NOT! LOL

I asked Mochi if she would take a picture with me to compare our size, and honestly, I have never noticed how much taller I am. Maybe because usually when I see her, she’s wearing shoes and I’m barefoot? But what a total surprise, I am not as petite as I thought!

However, I know there are some people out there that towers over me, so I’m going to call myself petite and people who are smaller super petite. 😛

I’m attaching another pic of me with Lizzie. I swear I am not a giant!

I Thought Gachas Were Supposed to Be Exclusive

    Gallery

I mostly opted out of gachas years ago, but every now and then something comes along that I really want and I’ll spend a ridiculous amount of money trying to get the rare item. I do that with the understanding that this is the only opportunity to get it. Maybe it’ll never be sold again, maybe it’ll become impossible to find, but that’s always been the appeal of gachas. You’re paying for the exclusivity as much as you’re paying for the item itself. That’s how it’s worked for as long as I can remember. Designers have traditionally kept their gacha collections exclusive instead of retexturing them and selling them at a discount a few weeks later.

That’s why I was surprised to see PurpleMoon release a retextured version of the Claudette Dress and Monique Shoes, which debuted at The Arcade just last month, now in The Saturday Sale for L$75. My friends and I spent quite a bit collecting, trading, and chasing those pieces through the gacha. Had we known that the dress and shoes would be available for L$75 less than a month later, I don’t think any of us would’ve spent nearly as much trying to complete the collection.

For me, it changes how I look at the brand going forward. If something new catches my eye, why buy it immediately if there’s a chance it’ll show up in a weekend sale a few weeks later? I’ve always thought of weekend sales as a place for older releases or brand new items created specifically for the sale. I’ve never expected to see a reworked version of a gacha collection that was still practically brand new. I barely had time to unpack mine before another version appeared for a fraction of what many of us had spent.

This isn’t about telling a designer how to run their business. They can sell their products however they like. I’m simply saying that decisions like this affect customer trust. People remember when they paid full price, especially when that full price came from a gacha system designed around chance. If customers start believing they can get the same item a month later for almost nothing, many of them will simply wait. I also wonder if this is happening because so many creators participate in weekend sales that they eventually run out of older products to discount and start dipping into very recent releases instead.

Today’s outfit is a mix of PurpleMoon’s Claudette accessories from last month’s Arcade gacha with the retextured Claudette Dress from The Saturday Sale. Ironically, I actually prefer this printed version over the original solid dress. For anyone who missed the gacha, it’s an incredible deal. I just think there should be a little more consideration for the people who paid the premium the first time around. Gachas aren’t normal purchases. They’re intentionally designed to encourage people to spend far more than an item is worth in pursuit of the piece they really want, and more often than not, that’s the rare one. When that same design comes back almost immediately at a deep discount, it’s hard not to feel like you wasted a lot of money trying to get it in the first place.

Is DLSS 5 a Glimpse Into Second Life’s Future?

DLSS 5 vs Raw Second Life snapshot (Slide to view before/after)

Thanks to Hamlet at New World Notes for the mention! Be sure to take the DLSS 5 Survey and share what you think.

DLSS 5 is so much fun to experiment with, but it’s not magic. It’s not going to suddenly make your avatar look drastically different, and it’s definitely not like AI editing that can sometimes turn a cartoon avatar into a realistic human. My Second Life avatar still looks completely recognizable. The textures may look a little better, details may stand out more, and there’s additional shading around the face, hair, clothing, and environment that gives everything a little more depth. Sometimes the difference isn’t even that dramatic, but there’s just enough added dimension that I really like the overall look.

Of course, there are going to be critics and purists, especially people who are against anything involving AI, but I don’t understand the need to loudly discourage other residents from experimenting with it. Whatever happened to Your World, Your Imagination? In real life, people put filters over their photos every day using phone apps, Photoshop, and a million other things. Second Life photography has always involved experimenting with lighting, advanced Third Party viewers, graphics settings, post-processing, etc. DLSS 5 is just another thing to play with.

I’ve posted thousands of raw Second Life photos across my social media over the years, so I don’t think using DLSS 5 suddenly means someone lacks photography skills. Sometimes I want a raw SL photo, sometimes I want to edit, and sometimes I want to press F6 and see what DLSS 5 does. If you want to try it, try it! You might love it, you might hate it, or you might decide the difference isn’t worth the trouble.

As I sit there pressing F6 to turn DLSS 5 on and off, though, I can’t help thinking that I’m getting a tiny glimpse into what Second Life might eventually look like. I can imagine creators continuing to push textures and materials in this direction, especially with hair and face skins, where more detailed shading can add so much depth. Maybe someday we won’t need an experimental filter to get this look at all.

    Second Life in your browser!

    Second Life in your browser!

Shout out to Hamlet’s Patreon for consistently recapping exciting Second Life news before everyone else. I suppose that is what being an insider is all about. I recall that years ago, Second Life was already running inside a browser through third-party services, so I have wondered why it took Linden Lab so long to offer this feature. Clearly, I am not a fan of the current mobile app. It is far too small anyway, even if it becomes functional someday. For users with high-end computers, running Second Life in a browser may not be as exciting; however, for those with low-end computers, it will be a game changer. Finally being able to run Second Life and see it as it is meant to be viewed, likely using cloud hardware, I assume? I’m not particularly technical, but many services now exist that allow users to access a higher-end computer remotely to play games or use 3D software.

Why is playing Second Life in your browser better than the mobile app? For one, whoever Second Life is trying to attract would likely prefer to experience the world on a much larger screen. During the brief few minutes that I tried SL in my browser, I found that it rendered everything quite well. Having access to the full Second Life viewer UI is essential. I can change my clothes, edit items, and perform any actions I normally would in the SL viewer.

I already see Second Life on ultra settings, so I wonder if someone who typically runs on low or mid settings will notice an improvement when viewing Second Life in high to ultra settings. If you are one of those users, please log in and let me know if you observe any enhancements.

As we begin a new year, I predict that this feature will eventually be mostly free for Premium Plus Second Life accounts, with limited usage for others. Perhaps they will even offer different plans for usage similar to streaming services. I hope that Premium Plus users receive it for free, as they should replace Speedlight access with this feature.

Will this attract new or returning users? Yes, people prefer ease of access. The mobile app is not user-friendly. This is straightforward. Will this benefit current residents? Yes, it is ideal for a quick login session to accomplish whatever tasks you need without the hassle of installing a viewer. You could likely use it on your $200 Chromebook if that is all you have.

Will this work on your mobile devices? No, it might function on an iPad, but when I logged into SL on my phone, I could not view the entire screen or access any navigation tools or my on-screen keyboard.
