When Fab Free turns into Fug Free

Are any of these skins FABULOUS to you?

These skins are too fug, I have decided to block out my fabulous DETOUR eyes to spare them from being associated with fugly skins.

[I wouldn’t wear this “Kristin Kruek” skin unless you like saggy boobs, mismatched seams, cut+paste, permanent piercings and other imperfections]

[Upper body and lower body skin tone does not match & omg where are the bits?!!!!]

[cut+paste and greasy]

Skins can be found at The Free Fandom Project inside avatar packages. Go at your own risk.

The Fab Free blog makes me sad, since they don’t live up to their name of blogging FABULOUSLY Free stuff in SL.  Fab Free does the community a total disservice by blogging skins that are entirely useless, unless one liked glaringly mismatched seams and boobs with no nipples :X I would recommend Free*Style for all your future freebie hunting needs. It’s a complete insult to people who DO like free stuff.. it’s saying, hey, since you like free stuff, take this piece of shit and clutter your inventory further. /barf

*Note* Fab Free is part of the Second Style Network, one of the largest fashion magazines in SL.

Gogo, I salute thee for showing these skins in all of their erm…glory!

  2. Wilma Delgado

Not sure why anyone would want these avatars. When I first saw the feed..I ran over to check them out. Not because they were free..but the teaser mentioned Rocky Horror. Being a Rocky fan..I HAD to have them. They’re HORRIBLE.
I realize that one shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth…they were free. But why would anyone put out such shoddy work? What is even more curious to me is why would a freebie blog recommend people to go get these things? Makes NO sense whatsover.
I tried all of them on. None of them are wearable. The Rocky Horror avatar was bad..but even worse than Rocky was the Hannah Montana avatar. It is actually scary looking!
I know that it’s not nice to comment on something that was a freebie..but this one is really that bad. Don’t bother with cluttering up your already over stuffed inventories with this stuff.

  3. Rack

They look like skins ripped from The Sims 2 (some PG skins come without naugthy bits there).

  4. brit

I think the skins yes are horrible…but I think it’s tacky for one blogger to put down another blog site. You could have given your opinion on the skins without putting down another blogger.

  5. Jhuzen Ketsugo

The skin is truly horrid, I mean, awful… yikes! But I think slagging on FabFree is unwarranted here. They did not make the skins, and while their pictures may not be as pretty as those on the Free*Style blog, nor all the items they blog of the most astounding quality, those gals work damn hard, and I can’t imagine they have that much free time beyond the numerous daily posts.
I think that Free*Style is a fabulous blog. I think their posts are wonderful, their photos and presentation well crafted. And yes the Second Style stamp of approval goes a long way. But again, not everything they show in the pictures is a freebie or dollabie.
I think that FabFree is not without it’s place in the grand scheme of things. If they are guilty of anything, it is that they over-blog freebies rather then let us miss out on something truly great. And they do put together looks from 100% freebies and dollarbies, which is a much trickier thing to do well.
Again, freebie etiquette suggests that if you don’t like it, take a pass. No one NEEDS to pick up items to clog their inventory, and if you try and don’t love, then we all have that nifty little thing called the Trash Can.

I thought Sims2 as well when I saw them, pretty standard sims2 style shading. Not very well constructed – freebie or not, a little work with the photosource might have gone a long way to reducing those seams. I shouldn’t be asking, because it’s SL and many people do it, but *why* do people release garbage onto the grid?

I’m sorry, I hate to say anything negative about someone’s volunteer blogging, but I have to agree with you about the quality of the Fab Free blog. I see it only because they tend to dominate the Fashion Planet feed, and it’s impossible to escape. I rarely look for freebies, so I know I’m not their target audience, but the majority of the items on the blog are kind of … um … hideous.
There, it’s been said. As I scroll past the entries I often wonder what they were thinking bringing those items to light, even if they ARE free. And the graphics at the end of each post that says “Fab Whoever” just makes me roll my eyes.
I rarely say anything critical because I know we’re all in this game for our own purposes and interests, but since we’re talking about it anyway, and it’s completely impossible to avoid if you read Fashion Planet (which is the only feed left, right?), I thought I’d just mention it.

@Anon: If you really truly hated to say anything negative – then you wouldn’t do it. The “I hate to say it but…” syndrome is usually a clear indication that you’ve absolutely been dying to say what is about to come out of your mouth but for whatever reason, haven’t had the opening or the balls to just do it before. 🙂 Just my L$2.
@Rack & @Sidd: You two aren’t alone in thinking that those were directly taken from Sims 2 skins.
And finally, for Gogo – you know, I read and mostly enjoy your blog. Mostly. Prior to this, even when I’ve disagreed with what you had to say, I’ve always respected your right to say what was on your mind, however you wanted to say it. I still do, but, I think you could have been a little less nasty towards the FabFree blog and it’s bloggers. Again just my L$2.

  10. does it even matter?

WOW GoGo, wow! I always knew you were a big ol’ snob but this is just pure unprofessional of you (like the 500$L shoes…who has the AUDACITY to charge that much? Not even Onyx or Fallingwater do!). FabFree never once mentioned that the SKINS are FABULOUS. “They have free avatars for the best in Sci-Fi like Dr. Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Torchwood, Harry Potter, Sweeney Todd, Yellow Submarine, Angel, Charmed, Smallville, Rocky Horror, The Shadow, and I, Robot.” This was the point of the blog post -scifi avies- but I guess it’s obvious that you would be too shallow to see that…maybe you’ve got too much pink glitter in your eyes or maybe your cute little blond head just doesn’t process fully…but I guess that’s irrelevant just like FabFree’s credibility is irrelevant to this shitty skin. It’s their job to list freebs, and when something is truly FABULOUS they will go out of their way to mention that. They didn’t in this case.
GOD I don’t even know how much longer I can stomach you on this blog feed.

  11. Shelby

Hmm – and also, in clicking your links in the sidebar, I notice you don’t rip Anna Zwiers to shreds for blogging the Fandom Project.
    Hmm. Interesting.

  12. Tilly

I don’t know why you’re complaining about something that is FREE. just because you don’t like an item doesn’t mean nobody else will.

  13. A designer

I have to say Gogolita, that I understand your frustration with the blog mentioned. I was a BIG fan in the later part of 2007, but I cannot say that any longer. I scan through the feed and I am frequently awed at what I see posted in their free item listings.
With so many fantastic things being giving out by designers all over the grid, I have a difficult time understanding why they blog the items they do. Now and then there is something nice, but it has usually been blogged by someone else (or more than one person) days ago. I now look to other blogs for shopping hints and free things. … And THEN we have the “lectures” — like we are ten years old (wink).
I feel like we should be given credit and blog space to the wonderful designers out there that keep many folks well dressed for no lindens not the people handing out things only a VERY new citizen would wear.
And Jhuzen, I think you misread Gogolita’s post. “*Note* Fab Free is part of the Second Style Network, one of the largest fashion magazines in SL.”
It is FAB FREE not FreeStyle that is part of the the Second Style Network.

  14. Aine M.

Get Real! You have to attack your rival to get kicks. Jealous much? I don’t see anything say they skins are what you should be going there for. The jacket from Angel worked well on my boyfriend who was looking for something similar. The Fandom Project is a bunch of wonderful people who enjoy having fun. Science Fiction is totally about the cheese factor and the avatars are fitting for that.
Have you met anyone from Fandom? Can you really be this cruel to their project because it isn’t up to your bubblegum snuff?
To the awesome people involved with Fandom, do not listen to this bitter person, you make SL fun and not some stuffy wannabe fashion blog.

  15. just a little birdie

Oh dear, is this really the best you can do? What, exactly, do you have to gain by putting someone else down, I wonder. Are you jealous that she’s part of the second style network? (Why else bring that up?) Why did you feel the need to rain hate on Fab Free but totally ignore Freebie Finds’ review of the exact same thing?
Surely you can come up with a better use for your time than being needlessly bitchy to someone who is only trying to showcase a variety of things. We all have different tastes. For example, a friend of mine loves body oil. I can’t stand it.
But at the core of the issue is that we’re BOTH right. So if you want to go around dressed in a skin I hate, that’s your business. If I want to run around wearing plywood boxes, that’s mine. Seriously, have a warm bath and a cup of tea. It’s much better for the soul.

  16. Anon

“By blogging skins that are entirely useless,” = you can’t read, since the FabFree post wasn’t about skins, but about complete avatars. Unless you routinely show T&A on your blog, OR are so desperately begging for attention that you would actually do the blogging equivalent of kicking a puppy, I don’t think you would have any reasonable expectation that these skins would be “saleable” quality or really give two shits if they weren’t.
With so many targets out there, why? Somehow, figures that the same woman who complained about Stiletto Moody’s overpriced non-original shoes, and then proceeded to put out an overpriced pump would be the one incapable of reasonable thought.

  17. brit

I am glad I am not the only one who finds it less than tasteful for Gogo to post a direct insult towards the fabfree blog. I agree, fabfree maybe spends too much time blogging whatever they find for free, whether it be worthy of a blog post or not. But, it’s unprofessional and tacky to throw blows towards another blogger, especially if no blows were thrown at Gogo first.
Gogo, I have been reading your blog for months now, and while I haven’t always agreed with your ways (for instance, your skin post during the Skin fair), I admired that you were honest and never hateful. However, in this post I think you are loosing respect and credibility. No offense, but your clothes, shapes, shoes, aren’t necessarily the best either and nor is what you post.
I hope that you refrain in the future from putting others down. You are classier and more professional than that.
    Nuff’ said <3

  18. Tenshi Vielle

Jesus, I think you just surpassed me on general bitchiness. It’s a freebie, wtf do you want?

  19. melaniekiddofsl

Tenshi, you are deluding yourself if you think anyone can top the incredible bitchiness you displayed when you wrote that article about Sabrina Doolittle.

  20. Anonymous

People are reading way too much into this. It’s a terrible skin. Free or not. If someone were giving away free burgers, I’d be pissed if I got e. coli from it.
In the haste to trash Gogo head to toe, have any of you took a damn look at the skin? It is pretty bad. I would never recommend a newbie to that. Unless I want them to come back at me and say I’m an asshole for trying to make them look like a bastard child of MS paint and Sims2.
Point is … quality shouldn’t be foresaken just because the item is free. It’s all about being seen anyway. Blog everything and everything to be constantly in view. Quantity over quality is what’s happening.
As someone who likes to shop I don’t want an avalanche of stuff unless they are good stuff. I’m sure whichever blog (I honestly don’t give a crap about these perceived blog wars so harping like there is one is tedious) put this item up went for quantity rather than assessing if the item was really suitable for mass consumption.
Just take it and learn from it. And next time, be smart on your coverage. Because your readership is smart and deserves better.

  21. Anessa Stine

    Wows.
I will be the first to admit that I wish there was more ‘fab’ and less simply ‘free’ on the blog in question, but I simply ignore the items that don’t catch my eye as I scroll through the feed.
The skins are pretty durn bad, thanks for informing the public Gogo – a real service has been done for those of us who shop with our monitors turned off. But I bet some nipple-phobics out there are pleased as punch to see those on the market.
Couldn’t you have atleast added a full length shot of you with your pumps on your feet and made it into a shoe post! That would have made this worth my 2 minutes of reading!

  22. Nana

I have no idea why you feel the need to complain about a freebie you get . I know that some freebie are not so nice but it’s freebie and it’s not like you lost some lindens.
Fabfree has been here for quite some time and I admire her efforts to update the site as often as possible. That is why it’s extremely rude to put down on other’s effort. Criticisms can be done in a subtle but constructive manner and yours is beyond tactfulness. But then the way you blog things just reflected your own tactless personality. At least you’ve shown us how unprofessional you can be.

  23. Anonymous

You know it’s beyond me how y’all are praising some blog for shoveling shit in your direction. I just don’t get it. What’s the point of those girls working so hard on getting their posts out if it’s all crap that no one appreciates anyway?

  24. Marni Grut

Pfft blimey its a freebie least the dont charge for it. There are worse skin attrcity out there that you actuly PAY for.
Slagging people of on the feed is sooooooooo 2007…………..

  25. annette voight

I am 150% sure that first skin is ripped from a Sims 2 content creator.. I know that belly button & mouth & collarbone from ANYWHERE lol it’s one of the most distinct (and gorgeous) skins i’ve seen from the sims2 community.Sadly, I think that as long as this person isn’t making any profit from it, that it stays within the original creator’s terms. Thats probably why it’s free and why your boobehs look cross-eyed

  26. Jhuzen Ketsugo

    @ a designer
On second read, it is true that I mistaken, FabFree is the one in the Second Style. Sorry… too little sleep. I appologise for that.
But I still say that even if they didn’t have the SS seal of approval, FabFree is still a valuable part of the feeds. It is awfully nice to look at a presentation of items and general commentary, and not be drawn into rediculous childish controvery while ripping apart rivals and reporting false leads, in order to garner attention and hits on your blog. I say use the scroll on your mouse and flick on by if it ain’t your cup of Oolong.

  27. Confused

Are the skins meant to used naked? I thought the idea of sci-fi avatars was to look like the tv character, not walk around with your tits out?

  28. Marcus Prospero

Your commentators are quite correct – that skin is indeed ported from Sims2, a fact its uploader freely admits. It does look rather awkward naked, but as is also noted above, it’s not meant to be used naked. It’s a canvas they’ve then painted a piece of fan art on.
For great free naked skins I invariably recommend Eloh Eliot’s shop nearby, and this post reminds me to actually put a box of them in the FFP shop itself. For free, of course.
The Free Fandom Project store, and my Tardis next door, have between them over 100 free items, ranging from Hogwarts uniforms and free textures, all the way up to full fitted Dalek avatars.
I’ve linked my name on this comment to our listing on the SL website, and hope many people come to visit us to marvel at our invisible nipples!

  29. Paige

Gogo I agree with you completely on a few points. That skin is so horrific that I dont even have a word for it. The fact that it is free should not make someone run to blog it. I’m sorry to say but I think FabFree stinks as far as quality and while we’re on the “horrific” topic some of the FF girls if they are in fact girls (because hazel could have fooled me) should really think about getting new shapes that compliment womens clothing and skins if thats what they’ll be showing. Even Celebrity Trollop who is a man irl knows well enough to buy womens premade shapes. Maybe FF should be finding the better quality freebies like i’ve been for the year that i’ve been in game. They dont even feature some of the more well known designers ones that wont look fug like that skin does. Whats up with that?

  30. Anonymous

Very simple, FabFree complainers. Start your own blog and blog about freebies that meet your standard…Wait…Look here, Gogolita!! Your own blog! You’re halfway there!
Despite some fashionistas’ obviously intense need to police the quality of the fashion feed (start your own feed, ya snobby bastards), it actually isn’t just about the elite 10 designers that get blogged about ad infinitum.
Moreover, FabFree, da blog, is the internet arm of an in-world group that, GASP, gets submissions from its members and caters to people who ARE newbie designers or residents, or who may want a faerie outfit in bright lime green. Frankly, I’m not quite sure WHAT would meet you peoples’ standard of post-worthy stuff, but I sure as hell know I don’t want you deciding who else in this Second Life gets to blog about theirs. I can decide for myself, thanks. I sometimes don’t agree with what Gogolita finds to be blog-worthy (a naughty nurse outfit springs to mind), but to each their own.
I also find it ridiculous that people who are not doing the damn job of hunting free shit out themselves are gonna sit back and play gotcha with OTHER people’s hard work. I mean, really, Gogolita. You’re posting about avies that FabFree didn’t even feature in the post. What, didn’t have time to bitch about the freebie metal texture on the non-human avatars?
Finally, if we’re really gonna parse the language here, I understood that FabFree was about fabulously free stuff, not free stuff that was “fabulous, dahling”. So, yeah…no need to go around extracting warranties about quality from a blog name, thx.

  31. Oops

I think part of the problem with the Fab Free blog is they don’t make their pictures all pretty nor always pick complimenting poses or hair, which is sometimes why the free stuff looks cheesier than it should. Creamy at FreeStyle just has an eye for making anything look good, which to me is the way it should be, you don’t want to make the designer offering the free stuff look like they make crap. But, your comment was not constructive criticism, it was just general bitchiness and as the majority of the comments say, it was free, if one doesn’t like it, then pass it up. One womans trash is another womans treasure.

What, didn’t have time to bitch about the freebie metal texture on the non-human avatars?
Finally, if we’re really gonna parse the language here, “FabFree” could be read to be about fabulously free stuff (awesome it’s free), as opposed to stuff that’s fashionista “fabulous” and happens to be free. So, yeah…no need to go around extracting promises or warranties about quality from a blog name, thx.

  33. Dii

People People People – Do you forget this is a Blog for the writer to express their own personal opinions!! I say Well done Gogolita for having the guts to truly say what you really think without having to wonder if so and so will approve of it first….
and for the record I do agree with her comments about the skins and yes they may be free but that doesn’t mean we want our time to be wasted by picking up and only to find out its disgustingly useless and have them clog our inventories while we wait for a few precious spare moments to go hunting through our inventory again to find the hideous creation so we can delete it!!!!!!

  34. Freebie hunter

Well this has been an interesting post to read anyway 🙂
As it often is, the “truth” is most likely in the middle. Gogolita, may have been too harsh with her criticism (whether deserved or not). Fab Free may take all this to be a bit of a wake up call that not EVERYTHING out there in a free box needs to be blogged and be a bit more discerning.
It IS disheartening to open up box after box of truly awful stuff. At the same time, there may be folks that actually LIKE it, so there is a place for a blog that blogs anything that is free.
And those of us that want to know what we are going after is “better” can find some of the other free blogs that are “pickier” and follow them. It is not like Fab Free is the only freebie blog around.

  35. Sae Luan

This post is just mean…what’s wrong with you? I know at least ONE blog I will be skipping through when I read Fashion World from now on…way to go, GOGO. I don’t mind honesty, but I for one hate bitching for the sake of hurting someone. PMS much? 😉

  36. Wilma Delgado

Oh good grief, people. The stuff is junk. I don’t usually get into word wars..but this one is ridiculous. If you want the freebie stuff..go get it..see for yourself. The point that I was trying to make is..not everything that says FREEBIE is worth blogging. These items are horrible. Now, on the other hand..if you want to wear them…go for it.

  37. Anna Zwiers

O snap! lol, you got to spread the hate bc/s I blogged them first. And, no I never stripped down to look at teh boobies (especially in the male skin I was wearing in the pic. linked to via name). XD
As mentioned (it’s pretty apparent to everyone) these are kitsch sci-fi/movie/tv inspired avatars.
    O you, you so funny!

  38. Sad but True

OK folks, I see that the original post was a bit harsh, but seriously, there is a fair amount of truth to it
Any followers of the blog mentionned will probably admit that over the last few months there seems to be a bit more quantity than quality. Where once you may have run right over to check out the item in question you now find yourself scrolling past many of the posts raising a questioning eyebrow.
No one likes to be overly mean or critical about a gift, we usually quietly delete it or don’t bother to go get them at all, but in this case it IS lower quality skin and since it had one positive “review” then it’s fair that an opposite opinion with more detail be made available. Keep in mind some of the clothing items could be worn with your own skins I guess.
The way I see it, the difference in the freebie type blogs is their purpose. Is it to simply blog as many free things out there as possible and let the residents choose or is to pick through and find the things that meet the bloggers fashion and quality standards and only blog those? There should be enough room for all, as readers we just have to choose for ourselves which meets the criteria we want in a blog and in a freebie.

  39. N.D.

Anon, she already has a freebie blog(see other blog mentioned in the comments).
This is a case of the writer of this blog trying to give her alt’s blog a boost by going after her most successful adversary.
This is not a case of “let’s go after the bad skins on a fandom avatar” or, wonder how the one avatar just won the creator $30,000L. It is Gogo trying to give her own blog a boost by attacking others.
Do yourself a favor, leave the attacks to Tenshi, she is much better at it and better researched.

  40. Anonymous

“This is a case of the writer of this blog trying to give her alt’s blog a boost by going after her most successful adversary.”
And you should leave the conspiracy theories to Agent Mulder. *rolls eyes*

  41. Lash

Whatever happened to the days when customers can say, I don’t like this, can you do better? And moreover, the designer replies back, hell yeah I can. No one’s untouchable here.
Should Gogo be nicer? Should she not say what’s right on her mind? Well, first of all “should” implies there’s a sense of obligation or duty in her actions. Everything in SL is completely voluntary. No one is bound to act in any way that pleases or displeases folks. So telling folks how to blog or speak is a type of self-righteous censorship that I find netnanny-nauseating. Wag your finger all you want. It’s her blog, her opinion, just like my comment is. Take it or leave it. But don’t assume you can make people act or express themselves in a way that you approve.
What really concerns me about this post is the skin itself might be from a dubious source. Are the suspected Sims2 designers who orginally made this skin also distributing their content in SL? Are they aware of this? Do they approve? If not, that skin has no right to be distributed in SL in the first place as it’s ripping off a content creator albeit from another game.
Another thing I don’t get is how folks are blowing off the quality becuz it’s a kitschy fandom skin (?). Like, it’s okay to look bad cuz it’s just an homage or something. Hey, take pride in your work if you really did make that on your own. Has everyone seen the Final Fantasy avies made by Damien Fate of Mirada? That’s kick ass quality fandom right there. So since when does fan-art equate to mediocrity? I would think as the population in SL expands the expectations for quality go higher.
But we’re not seeing that part as clearly. Let’s all just gang up on each other and hiss from our corners cuz we’re all so fashionista and shit. /sarcasm
Anyway, so friggin jaded from all of this cattiness. More things change, more they stay the same. Peace.

  42. Electric

Free stuff is worth what you pay for it. But in the case of these skins I think you should be paid to take them away. GAG!!!
Gogolita has a much right to criticize the bad free stuff on the FabFree blog just as much as she has the right to herald the finery that some designers produce. Perhaps she was not overly tactful, in the case of the skins, but after looking at them again they got the words they deserved.
FabFree certainly doesn’t represent its name. Most stuff isn’t fabulous.
As for those of you who a complaining, about one blogger trashing another, you should look in the mirror so you can see how hypocritical you are. In case you miss that it means you are doing exactly what you are telling Gogolita not to do. Get over it.
    Rock on Gogolita, rock on!!

  43. brit

She may have the right and freedom to say what she wants, but I (we) also have the right to no longer come to her blog due to lack of professionalism and class. She deserves to be attacked if she attacks others for no apparent reason other than her being dissatisfied with the quality of the FabFree blog. If you can’t take the heat, don’t step in the kitchen.

  44. Hazel Homewood

    Quote from Paige`s comment:
I’m sorry to say but I think FabFree stinks as far as quality and while we’re on the “horrific” topic some of the FF girls if they are in fact girls (because hazel could have fooled me) should really think about getting new shapes that compliment womens clothing and skins if thats what they’ll be showing.
    ———————————————————————————————–
And here´s the answer to this sh*t (I´m really sick of it!): Paige, the avatar Hazel is female and there´s a REAL woman behind Hazel. I don´t fool around with other people! And as I mentioned before, Hazel`s shape is near my “real shape”. So, if you would see me iRL with my “ugly” shape/body, Paige, what would you say? Huh? Would you tell me, it´s time to get a new, beautiful and more female body? Would you give me the adress of a well known cosmetic surgeon?
Honestly, I don´t have a clue why my shape has to be mentioned here at all???
    Sorry for off topic.

  45. Anna Zwiers

Lash, the reason I mention that the item is an AVATAR is to add emphasis (not excuse) that the skin was not intended to be worn singularly. mwah
    hiss

  46. Samara Kasshiki

Hazel hon, I don’t care if you are an AARDVARK in RL (just kidding), I have enjoyed your posts. Hope you are back soon. No one ever knows who is behind an avatar or avatarS and why should it even matter? We can all be anything we want in Phil’s Place and if you choose to be “yourself”, then that only tells me that you are comfortable in your RL body. Can that be a BAD thing? I don’t think so.
I, Samara, am about 4 inches taller and have over time lost my RL butt of my 30s mostly because I got tired of changing shapes for photo shoots and skirts. But there is much that is Samara that is me still. Reinventing ourselves only goes so far — at least in my mind.
Maybe in some ways this VERY well attended (noticeably by the folks that seem to want to boycott Gogolita’s blog which I think is pretty funny) is good for everyone. Venting as pressure release? I don’t know.
I will say that much of what has been said here has truth to it — no matter what “side” you are on. Most likely nothing will be SOLVED in any way but hopefully people can take some important thoughts away from the ideas here.

I haven’t tried the skin on myself so I don’t know what it’s like (and since my shape is really different I think that makes a difference). However, the skin doesn’t need detail, it’s free for fannish people who either want a costume for whatever reason — to roleplay for a contest, whatever. I guess someone one might want to roleplay Lana Lang and Clark having sex, but then maybe they’d want a better skin.
I’ve used Free FAndom Project stuff, I got myself a Fourth Doctor avatar and also a pack of Daleks. Was it omigod! Top quality? Nope. However it was pretty good quality for free.

Wow, this is bringing up a lot for me. Some of you may have noticed that I haven’t blogged in a while. (or not) When I first started blogging, there was no other freebie bloggers. I started it because I had a lot of friends who would start playing and then would get frustrated because they couldn’t figure out how to look good. Then came Fab Free. I became overwhelmed by the sheer number of things they were blogging. When I first started, I basically blogged anything that was free, then the quality got higher and higher and I only wanted to blog really great stuff. It was also important that I look good so that I wasn’t doing the designer a disservice and that I provide Slurls with everything. Then Creamy came along and started doing what I was trying to do so much better than I could that I was very impressed and kind of intimidated. I just started losing enthusiasm. Freebie blogging was fun when it was a treasure hunt. It’s like when I played The Sims, once I got the cheat to make money and I could buy whatever I wanted,it wasn’t fun anymore.
About these specific Avatar/skins that GoGo blogged. I was so excited to go over there and pick up the Angel and Buffy ones. I actually just laughed that they were so bad. It inspired me to try to create my own using quality skins and my own shapes. (stay tuned!) Maybe GoGo was harsh, but I’m kind of relieved that someone said something. I couldn’t because as a freebie blogger it would just look like I was mad that someone took my ball. I think it is possible to have a more RL shape and put together a great blog and show off designers at their best (Where the hell is Swirly?)

Silly commenters, can’t you understand? Only Gogolita gets to criticize other people’s blogs and what they post about! I mean, her defenders subscribe to that oft-quoted precept: Do as I say, not as I don’t do.
In fact, I vote that Gogolita dictate what goes on the feed, cuz far be it from people to be forced to SCROLL. *gasp* I mean, it’s too goddamn hard, what with bloggers MAKING you get free stuff by posting it ON THE FEED. And imagine the *french accent* horreur *end french accent* of finding that what she gets for free is not the same as what she pays for. *dab eyes*
I’m inconsolable! Don’t they understand that that buy thing we have to do with the mouse is too hard? What with all that hand eye coordination? And please, let’s not even talk about deleting stuff from your inventory, what with the recent items tab putting those newly bought freebie items, like, RIGHT THERE. You still have to click the item and then choose words from a pull down to get things to delete. God, if I could do that I would like, have my own blog or something.
I mean…it’s so so hard to be fashionable and cheap. So hard, in fact, that I would rather people didn’t post about freebies, even when they post pictures that allow me to see the quality beforehand. Frankly, I can’t be bothered with pictures (see scrolling comment, above).
I ask: Isn’t it a bloggers duty to spoon-feed..pardon…BLOG only those things that meet the upmost of standards, preferably if they’re in your OWN store? In fact, let’s all agree, shall we? Anyone who posts anything from a store must make sure that every detail is perfect in every item sold at the store, because god forbid anyone find anything wrong in any of the items for sale, free or not. By way of example, see the FabFree post mentioned above. It was FabFree’s OBLIGATION to purchase every avatar and decide that the entire store was post-worthy as a whole. Now, wouldn’t that have been so far better? Don’t we all just want one blog to decide what we all get to see? Choice…it’s overrated.
    Thanks much,
Fashionista with a sense of entitlement
PS- I DEMAND THAT NO ONE ELSE COMMENT.

Heading for bed and I just wanted to make a couple more comments on this. Somewhere WAY up in this long list of posts, a respondent mentioned that Gogolita had started her own blog as part of an ego quest (my words — I am not going to read this long list again).
I don’t know if ego had anything to do with it. I don’t know her in any formal way. What I DO know is that there had been shop owners who had been trying to get on the feed for MONTHS AND MONTHS with no reply from the person in charge of the feed. Iheartsl.com gave those of us that couldn’t get on the feed by “normal” means a way to be seen. So I THANK HER VERY MUCH for doing all that and assume many others do also.
And to the post from beatrix right above this, I quote: “Was it omigod! Top quality? Nope. However it was pretty good quality for free.”
THIS is a lot of the problem and possibly (I don’t know) the energy behind the original post in the first place.
——- There are MANY designers (and yes, I am among them) who are putting out first quality, off the wall items, for gifts. Mine have gone into the several hundreds of dollar value ( people have and did pay that after the freebie time was up). Others have been even more generous.
To have our first quality merchandise lumped in with the “pretty good for a freebie” stuff is really an insult to all the designers who are putting out GOOD things. If this mentality continues, eventually, they will most likely cut down or cut out their gifts. I have already made most of my gifts now to the group.
Somewhere we need to find a middle ground. So far, we haven’t.

    @ N.D’s comment
“This is a case of the writer of this blog trying to give her alt’s blog a boost by going after her most successful adversary.”
Oh ffs! I really didn’t want to get involved with this, but now I’ve been infuriated!
Gogo is NOT my alt, and if you knew me personally you would realise this is not my style. If I don’t like something I just wouldn’t feature it on my blog – simple!
Gogo and I are friends and I like her. Yes, she can be controversial and tells it like it is sometimes and as much as you slag her off, you love to read it. Personally I would never criticise someone elses creations (particurlarly if it is free) because I wouldn’t to risk hurting anyone’s feelings, I could probably be accused of being ‘too nice’. Oh yes, I like to bitch as much as the next person with my friends, but I wouldn’t write it on my blog – that’s not what I’m here for.
I hardly have enough time to run the Free*Style blog and group never mind Gogo’s Juicy empire and blogs…and I live in Scotland and she’s in the US.
Well since I am here I suppose I should give my thoughts on the skins from the Fandom Project? Well, I tried these skins a while back and yes they are pretty shocking when you strip them down – I put this down to the fact that they are really only meant to be worn with the complete avatar set because of the seam issues etc. but they are free and just a bit of fun – YAY!
Have to say, I am pretty impressed with the guy from Angel, he looks good to me but I’ve not tried him out personally. (oooo er missus!)
    Fin.

  53. Anon

Totally out of order. But I suppose that was the point, seeing as not once has queen gogo responded to any of the ridiculous accusations in the comments. You know what constitutes a good blogger? Someone who expresses their opinion…yes, but also someone who is responsible in their posting (IE researching, fact checking etc). The skins were clearly never meant to be worn alone and shame on you for trying to make people think they were. And just so we are clear, endless posts on your shapes and pumps are not good blogging. Bitchy pms styled posts about your competitors are not good blogging. Nasty skin reviews when you have never made a skin are not good blogging. You have an opinion, but the way you choose to express it looses you points time and time again. Clearly you need to actually create some content in SL (sorry mate but any wanker can make a shape) before you spew your rancid opinion on the general populous. Oh and btw, any attention is not good attention. You may want to consult a therapist about you attentiion seeking issues.

  54. Anonymous

Any attention is good attention doofus! As we say in journalism, bad news is good news, so yay to Gogo for slagging off fabfree blog, they do blog good stuff, but unfortunately they lack presentation. As a reader I am turned off by that ! Boohoo! also those who don’t like general bitchiness, don’t read, there is a close button on your window for a reason! pffftt !
    I <3 bitchiness ! xoxox

  55. Fluffy

I think the comments thread here is quite entertaining, but Gogo’s post was perfectly sensible. I like opinionated blogs, and I don’t think her criticism of Fab Free was over the line. It’s just her opinion. When I read a restaurant review and the reviewer thinks the food is terrible, I don’t want her to hold back to spare the feelings of the chef. The same thing applies here.
Personally I wish Fab Free focused more on the “Fab” than the “Free” too. It’s a group blog with seemingly dozens of contributors, so it would be difficult to hold the thing to too tight a standard regardless. That said, the low quality of so many of their freebie finds (not all of them – occasionally they find amazing stuff) has me reading it less over time. But there are certainly others who like it just how it is, so I’ll let the readers and contributors sort it out.

Gogo’s already said what she wanted to say in her original post.
To you ridiculous people who are babbling on about her supposed penchant for censoring and dictating what gets published, I would like to remind you of a couple of things:
Gogo was one of the people behind the iheartsl fashion feed. She pushed for that project because she was of the belief that EVERYONE should get a fair shake at having a voice on the feed it they wanted it, and wanted to have a hand in enabling people. Anyone who wanted in on the feed, got in — the only requirement was that if they wanted to be on the fashion feed, what they wrote had to be about fashion. Another feed was set up for blogs that had non-fashion content.
When the iheartsl fashion feed had to end due to logistical constraints, she did the next best thing she could think of to keep that spirit of iheartsl’s openness alive — she made it into a community blog, almost like the What’s New blog only this one includes people who want to review fashion as well. Again, where is the censorship in that?
As for this site, she may have comment moderation on, but she is publishing EVERYTHING that comes in, including the ones that are quite vociferous in their bashing of her. That is hardly what I’d call censorship.
With that said, she has an opinion and she is entitled to air it on her personal blog. How she expresses herself, blunt and sans sugarcoating, is entirely up to her. If she sees something that displeases her, then why not say so? It’s completely within her right, as it is within all of yours to say you dislike her manner in doing so.
People review things that they aren’t capable of creating on their own, all the time. I don’t know how to build a car, but if I buy/rent/am given one that turns out to be a lemon, then you can be damn sure I will call it a lemon and let others know, too. It’s no different in this case — she saw a skin being blogged by a member blog of the Second Style Blog Network that was horrible, and she called it horrible. Simple as that. If she chooses to be harsh in the way she criticizes, that’s her prerogative, just as it is everyone else’s prerogative to say she’s being way harsh.
My point is, okay, you don’t like how she worded her post? Fine, dislike it all you like. But saying she’s wanting to censor the feed when all she’s doing is saying what’s on her mind, that’s just going off on a rather shortsighted tangent.

  57. Wilma Delgado

Grins! Mel, I love you! You just said what I wanted to say..but it came off in such a nice way;)…..I’ve deleted so many of my own comments in the last 24 hours..because they just sound downright bitchy:).

  58. Anon

Nice parsing there, Melanie. She didn’t just blog about a skin, but about a blog, and I think people are peeved about one or both.
I applaud you and Gogolita for your thwarted to improve on the Fashion feed, but let’s not pretend here that Gogolita was just blogging about a skin and only called THAT SKIN horrible. For someone who is as open and free with blogging and dissemination of information as you say she is/seemed to be, to claim that another blog is doing the community a “disservice” and “insulting” people, well, it just undercuts that. Gogolita’s post, in the end, is as much about her opinion on how much a blogger needs to do, and how good things in that place have to be, before they post something. Pardon some of us if we think she has a standard that may be so high as to end up undercutting that same openness that you say inspired you both in the first place.

While I am all for freedom of speech, it all comes down to how she presented herself. Is her blog a personal blog where she is welcome to say what she feels? Absolutely. However, as a blogger with a focus on Fashion in Second Life you are catering to an audience, your blog no longer becomes personal, therefore it is up to you to know your audience and what they will or won’t like. Gogo is for the most part a great blogger who writes excellent reviews but there have been numerous times where she has come across unnecessarily bitchy and rude. As readers we are entitled to give our opinion on her posts (otherwise comments would be closed, right?), and I don’t think it is out of line for anybody to comment on what they didn’t like about this particular post. After all, we have freedom of speech as well, right?
ps – if I stood on a street corner and picked out a random person with a awfully tacky pair of earrings on, is it ok for me you to yell on that street corner about how bad she looks? Sure, I guess so? But, is it something I SHOULD do? No.

  60. steinshilova

Yes ma’am, these skins are ugly. Yes sir, the Fab Free stuff is waaaaay overdone, but we need to remember that each and every blog is valid in their own special way. If there are 10 blogs raving about freebies, there should be at least one blog keeping those people on their toes.
I have found many a good freebie. Excellent ones, actually. Yet I never see those blogged. I wonder why not…
Oh well, I will keep on ignoring the Fab Free blog posts just like I do the friggin Princess Carita Jewelry by Alienbear Gupte that is posted in a dozen HUGE pics everyday. Oh and the ruched tops. Those suck, too.

  61. Creamy

In reply to Steinshilova. I know we are going off on a tangent here now, but I just wanted to provide an answer to your question.
“I have found many a good freebie. Excellent ones, actually. Yet I never see those blogged. I wonder why not…”
I personally get so many msgs everyday about wonderful free items as I’m sure my fellow freebie bloggers do, it’s virtually impossible to cover them all so of course some get missed.
I have a very busy RL too, I don’t get the time to shop any more like when I first started up the blog, so now I rely on the notices from Free*Style groups and tips. I try my hardest but I often find it really difficult even to go and look at a lot of these items, it’s just the luck of the draw which ones stand out.
If the designer sends it to me and saves me the trip then that usually gets featured (providing if I like it and if it isn’t lost in my inventory). It really sucks when we miss something good but we do try our best. 🙂

  62. Indestructible

People shouldn’t be selling sci fi and horror avatars based on franchises YOU DON’T OWN in the first place! You are really fucked up for doing that in the and everyone who does that is pathetic and definitely lacks any creativity or originality. Like all the Star Wars creators who think they can rip Lucas’s shit and sell it. That’s fucked. Yet when someone steals one of your unprofessional hair or skins you all fucking throw up IP posters in your stores, but the irony is people in SL are stealing from EVERYTHING out of SL they don’t own and that seems accepted and it should not be. Everyone who does it should be fucking sued up the ass by the respective real creators. The new Ironman av for instance which I reported to Marvel and they were very unhappy about it. I hope they take action. This isn’t really what this about but no one should be selling stuff that belongs to a real franchise. It’s illegal. Read the disclaimers on the fucking sites.

Whoa what a crazy amount of comments !!!
I look..I squint…I shake my head sideways and still I don’t see anything deserving such vitriole.
“fabulous” free stuff should blog more “fabulous” than JUST free to clog up our inv..is what i see in Gorgeous’ post.
The skins are a tiny aspect of the Scifi outfits which are cute and quirky as true fan art should be.
Did it the Fab Free blog deserve such a vicious callous mean bitchy comment ?
What are you talking about ??
And Gorgeous sells things too expensive !!! Buyer beware..can someone point me to the “blog about truly value for money SL creations made by original artists with no reference to any thing copyrighted trademarked or mentioned in SL with no help from people who have previously helped other content creators …. dot com dot omg get some perspective.
I knew I should have copyrighted that first cube I rezzed and cleverly named object… and dont get me started on Bubbles..(which BTW were grabbed from the web and tweaked in PSP to add that damn subtle alpha’ing.
Gogo would love Fab free to be more Fab…what a bitch !!!!
*note sarcasm and disbelief added at writer’s intent.

I know, there are already soo many coments… But i could not stay quiet after reading all this…
I think its very sad and unprofessional, that a blooger writes something so negative about another blogger. Its ok, that not all the freebies are with a soo great quality as the normal items. But anyway its not necessary to write so bad about a blog.
How about the items that are expensive and have also a bad quality? Why dont you talk about them?
As long the items are freebies and no one is with a gun directed to your head for you buying and wearing them, why do you make such a trouble???
The blog of Anna Zwiers, Creamy and FabFree are my favourites and i will go on visiting them, whatever you write. But your blog i will take from my favourites list.
I am in sl for over a year and i love to hunt for freebies as i do for spending over thousends lindens for many pairs of the “sexiest sculpted” pumps in sl. I am sure i will think twice before i buy any other pair of these shoes.

Give people who read these blogs some credit. One person not kissing your ass isn’t going to ruin whatever perceived following your blog has established. I’m not an impressionable person so whatever people say doesn’t effect me. If she says something sucks or is good, big fucking deal. Sometimes I’ll check or I just don’t bother at all. Gogo is simply opinionated. That’s part of her personality and I wouldn’t change that about her ever.
If all you want from a blog is info then just post a bunch of pics with corresponding LM’s then STFU. But how many bloggers out there are doing that? You’re ALL generally friggin subjective. QUIT ACTING LIKE HER OPINION CAUSED AN IMBALANCE TO THE HARMONY OF THE SL FASHION COMMUNITY. Get thicker skin or get out.
Anyways, some comments that followed were so hyper-defensive and displayed a vindictive sourness that it just confirmed for me how easily vile people can get when they have anonymity on the intarwebz. OMG she said the skin was FUG, she said we blog FUG stuff! Rip her a new one! We’re out for blood! God forbid someone dared pissed on your “fashion fabulous” zen. It happens sister. It’s not about you, it’s about your lack of taste.
Don’t ya’ll see how ridiculous you look? So why should I take your indignation, or anyone else’s for that matter, seriously. Someone thought something ugly WAS blogged and they were called out on it. That’s on you. Get the fuck over it. But it’s comedy gold. So maybe don’t get over it. I love watching people lose their cool over petty issues. And I love the one who suggested therapy. Dude, if this catfight is therapy worthy for you, just log off now before your poor widdle brain implodes itself. Boo hoo — spaz.
I for one, hope Gogo keeps blogging in her unprofessional, exuberantly tactless manner (geezus who ever thought professionalism and blogging go hand in hand needs a reality check). Keep giving her 2 cents on what’s shitty and what’s not. In the grand scheme of things, she’s just playing the game her way. And pwning plenty in the process it seems by the way folks’ are letting their knickers constrict their gonads.
    Hurray for popcorn! 😛
