PrimFeed, another Second Life Social Media site
I’ve been seeing quite a bit of buzz lately around PrimFeed, which is touted as a Flickr alternative specifically for Second Life residents, created by a fellow resident. Interestingly, PrimFeed isn’t the only social media site exclusively for Second Life, despite such claims. Personally, I don’t use any of these Second Life-specific platforms because I prefer to share my Second Life photos and blog with the entire internet.
Why Some Second Life Residents are Upset with Flickr
The primary reasons that some residents are frustrated with Flickr often boil down to two things:
- They aren’t PRO users and face limitations.
- Frequent Terms of Service (TOS) violations, such as posting adult content and not properly moderating it, or engaging in commercial activities on a free account results the account being deleted.
Flickr offers a free option that lets users host up to 1,000 photos, provided they adhere to specific restrictions. On the other hand, PrimFeed permits adult and commercial content on free accounts but limits file sizes to 1500×1500 pixels. I believe free account limitations are justified due to the operational costs of such platforms, and I’m willing to pay for a service as long as it meets my needs.
My Take on Flickr vs. PrimFeed
I’m not dissatisfied with Flickr nor am I seeking an alternative. Since signing up as a PRO member in 2007, I’ve found Flickr to be the best photo hosting service for Second Life brands and bloggers. For under $60 USD a year, I enjoy unlimited photo and video storage and the ability to embed these media into my blog seamlessly.
First Impressions of PrimFeed
PrimFeed strikes me more as a social media platform, akin to a streamlined version of X (formerly Twitter), rather than a robust image hosting site like Flickr. It offers social features but lacks the comprehensive photo hosting capabilities that Flickr provides.
In my opinion, PrimFeed is not a replacement for Flickr. It’s more of a pared-down social media platform that may or may not gain traction. Without enough paying subscribers, its sustainability is questionable due to the costs associated with hosting and bandwidth.
Here are the essential features missing from PrimFeed:
- No viewing without a PrimFeed account and are signed in
- No high quality image format, everything is converted/compressed to .webp
- No favorites tab, makes it hard to revisit images I liked
- No search, can’t find anything I’m looking for
- No direct messaging/private messaging
- No views count
- No dates on gallery images
- No groups
- No albums
- No tagging other people
- No tags
- No sharing outside of PrimFeed
- No private photo settings
- No embed code for your blog
- No clickable profile links
- No videos
- No notifications to email
- No custom URL/ability to change url
- No stats who liked/shared/viewed?
- No editing tools/batch editing for photos
- No automatic account deletion (must send a notecard and wait 72 hours)
Is PrimFeed a reasonable replacement for Twitter? Absolutely. It’s designed to look and feel just like Twitter, ensuring you’ll feel right at home. Plus, you won’t have to deal with annoying real-life ads and irrelevant content cluttering your feed. When you evaluate PrimFeed as an alternative to Twitter, you’ll find it much more appealing.

Truth Hair

Truth has just released 3 adorable new hairstyles!! I love all of them, as usual. I love braids, head bands, bangs.. they’re all super duper cute.
I thought I would be over the ~smile~ emote today, but I’m still loving it. So hello Second Life, this is me abusing the emote again. CHEESE!
I have to get something off my chest. Truth names his hair after people who have suggested hairstyles or friends or random pretty names. Well, I saw someone say they would not wear the Lizzie hairstyle because it’s named after Lizzie Lexington (or maybe that’s just a coincidence?). All I have to say to that is, don’t be petty! Cos when stuff is named after people I don’t care for, I still wear it. I won’t deny myself a cute hairstyle. And there’s plenty of items named people I don’t like in SL, should I avoid those items to punish the creator(s)?
Anyways, get over yourself.
The Lizzie hairstyle from Truth has adorable twin braids. Also, while you’re there, check out the Gogo hairstyle!! I spent forever there looking for my hairstyle so I could purchase it in the Swedish texture. I don’t have a bunch of Truth styles in Swedish Blonde cos they were older releases, and Swedish Blonde is a fairly new texture. I wish there was a big fat Swedish Blonde pack you could buy for ALL Truth hairstyles.

Peach Princess
This new Lady in Red hairstyle from Exile is inspired by Little Red Riding Hood, and comes with a color-changing cape. I really wanted to put together a Red look, but so many people already have and it’s stunning. See it on Exile’s Flickr stream! I went with a Peach Princess look, and wore the Kallisto Dress from Gizza. I hardly ever wear flexi-prim dresses anymore, but I really thought the Pink from this dress worked well with the Coral colored cape.
I’m so excited about this cape, I can’t wait to make more looks ranging from sexy to dangerous!

Stop Ripping Art That Isn’t Yours.
The person responsible for the mural in this painting is MALT, an artist from Detroit who does beautiful paintings around town and abroad. I recognized this picture because the irl version is located at an art park not far from me (scroll down to the last picture), and his style is recognizable just about anywhere.
I am not the first Detroiter to be active in the grid. Detroit Techno Militia was here once too. I’ve seen Niagara‘s work for sale at Tart Gallery, I’ve seen tons of great art in galleries that said they were used with permission, but I always had a funny feeling about it. Something was always off.
So when I recognize a fellow painter’s work in the game, especially if they’re a local artist, I contact the artist to let them know what’s going on. Sometimes they have actually given permission to have their work for sale or used in the grid, but many times they don’t even know their work is being used at all.
This practice is especially troubling when it comes to to hi-res photos like the one in the picture. I can tell it’s of a good quality. Whoever uploaded the texture either took a picture of this themselves, or ripped off a hi-resolution photo of the mural.
Many people still don’t understand this rule about art in Second Life, so let’s be clear:
YOU CAN’T UPLOAD ART/TEXTURES TO THE GRID WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE PERMISSION TO.
- You can’t just “take art” from Google searches and use them on tshirts and clothing.
- You can’t use Disney movies on mesh versions of a VHS tape for c88 because you think it’s quirky and cute and that Disney has “enough money”.
- You can’t upload books you didn’t author that aren’t public domain because “you think all creative work should be open source”.
- You can’t demand to be talked to privately about this in order to prevent a public discussion. Get over yourself.
The sim this belongs to is filled with art that is both corporate (I saw an ad for Levi’s on the other side of the wall in the photo), and from other art that is so varied, it couldn’t possibly be all sourced with permission. I won’t link to them because it would encourage visits or possibly even hate–but I have contacted the muralist to tell him where his art is being used.
It’s not snitching, it’s what happens when other artists are tired of seeing work abused in Second Life and want it to stop. The grid should be a place to foster creativity and inspire others, not to deposit work you’ve taken from others.
